Recording: Analytics and agriculture

The recording from yesterday's session on data and analytics in agriculture is now available. Chris Perry - a potato farmer - detailed how they use analytics to transform their farming operation, moving to "biomimicry" (following the natural biological process) and reducing the impact of chemicals on farming.

At first glance, a somewhat obvious question is "well, isn't that nice, but what does this have to do with learning analytics"? Data and analytics are fairly agnostic. It doesn't matter what the target (government spending, healthcare, business, education), analytics techniques are fairly consistent across multiple domains. We can learn from analytics activity in other sectors.

Final point: Chris addresses a challenge in his talk: moving past analytics for the sake of analytics and start using analytics as a means fo revising long-held practices in farming. Obviously, the implications for education are significant as well, namely, analytics as a means to evaluate what is happening in classrooms/courses and determining where inefficient (or even nonsensical) practices exist.

Analytics and the Academic Library: Peaceful Coexistence? LAK12
Nancy, Libraries and Analytics
There is one thing you must know about librarians: we prize intellectual freedom and the privacy of the individual user. For example, the American Library Association's "Intellectual Freedom Principles for Academic Libraries" states:"The privacy of library users is and must be inviolable. Policies should be in place that maintain confidentiality of library borrowing records and of other information relating to personal use of library information and services."In many US states, there are .... Who's crunching the numbers on societal networks of influence on education?
Darren Cambridge, Darren Learning in Public
Of the LAK12 Week 1 readings, I was most intrigued by "Untangling the Social Web." Beyond the staggering statement that "in the past five years IBM had spent more than $11 billion dollars buying makers of network-analysis software," surely a sign this whole learning analytics business is likely to be more than a fad, I was drawn particularly to the final section on the future of network analysis. The article points to the analysis of "influences between larger segments of society" as a next .... [Link] Tue, 24 Jan 2012 22:59:11 -0500 [Comment]

Learning Analytics MOOC
Darren Cambridge, Darren Learning in Public
I'm going to try Tumblr for blogging about the LAK12 course. I don't have a primary blog for general stuff, although I write and edit on a number of more specialized ones. Perhaps this will turn into a more general blog. We'll see. I'm taking the course for a couple of reasons: I'm generally interested in the topic, and I'd like to learn more about how the American Institutes for Research, where I work, can do more work in this area. I'm the principle .... [Link] Tue, 24 Jan 2012 15:46:33 -0500 [Comment]

Metacognition and Learning Analytics
wgreller, Reflections on the Knowledge Society
Following the first live session in the latest MOOC on Learning and Knowledge Analytics (LAK12), I did some reflection on the direction that Learning Analytics has taken over the past year or two. As far as I can see, Learning Analytics follows to a large extent the line of web analytics, but with the intention [...] [Link] Wed, 25 Jan 2012 17:00:03 +0000 [Comment]

Imogen Bertin, Imogen Bertin: Confused of Cork
I'm trying out a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) for the first time. Wha? Here's a nice explanation of what a MOOC is by Dave Cormier. It's a course based on constructivist, and even connectivist ideas, usually free with no entry requirements. The participants create the learning between themselves with guidance from the organisers. It isn't just in one place online like a Blackboard or Moodle course. The one I'm taking is on twitter, the social bookmarking tool Diigo,.... [Link] 2012-01-24T22:36:00.000-08:00 [Comment]

Using Wolfram Alpha
Jeroen Donkers, Jeroen's Course blog Learning Analytics #LAK12
Inspired by one of the big data video's in the first week of our #LAK12 mooc, I decided to look at Wolfram Alpha again. Since I used my iPad to view the video, I used the tablet to visit the website. It adviced me to install the app, which is not for free. I decided to do so and started playing around. The presenter argued that Wolfram only uses validated cured data and that harvesting the web is not a good idea. I only agree if you do not ask any question to Wolfram Alpha that any child .... Me gustó mucho esta reflexión de David Jennings en el marco de LAK12, el curso de analítica del aprendizaje que estoy haciendo: What I like about Last.fm is that, notwithstanding the fact that all your data is public visible, it still feels like you own it.
