Last year around this time, I read Lionel Shriver's Post-Birthday World. Week 7: Open Learning Analytics

This week, the feature presentation was from Simon Buckingham Shum who was describing a joint proposal from a group of international researchers on the merits of an open analytics platform. (Accompanying whitepaper.) Buckingham Shum opened by referencing Gardner Campbell's talk the previous week and the importance of being alert and not simplifying the learning analytics process too much. Try a MOOC for a Change

Signed up for the Learning and Analytics course. Over the next several weeks the course facilitators propose to provide an introduction to learning analytics and how it's being deployed in various contexts for the purpose of education and well, learning about learners.  My take on the MOOC approach is that it's not about the content you're supposed to remember or read, it's about the learning that results from the activities or interactions you engage in with others - or ... The learning analytics massive open and online course (MOOC) started last week. Lots of representation from folks in academia, public education, research organizations and corporate, all got together in Blackboard to learn how to participate in a MOOC, and also, to learn about this new discipline of making sense of, and unlocking the value of data in educational contexts.
