Miners or analysts: What's in a Name?
Rebecca Ferguson, Diving for Pearls
For an educator using a web-based course delivery environment, it could be beneficial to track the activities happening in the course web site and extract patterns and behaviour prompting needs to change, improve or adapt the course... For a learner using a web-based course delivery environment, it could be beneficial to receive hints from the system on what subsequent activity to perform based on similar behaviour by other 'successful' learners. This is from Zaïane (2001) – .... #LAK12 No Shadow Databases!
Nancy, Libraries and Analytics
Respondents to the ECAR study by Goldstein said that they have not had a lot of success in reducing the presence of shadow databases. Shadow databases are "silo" information systems maintained by separate functional units in the organization (or even within the same unit) which contain the same types of information, or perform similar functions. The problem is, usually they do NOT contain the same information. Shadow databases proliferate when there is weak oversight of the institution at the .... #LAK12 examples of 5 levels of sophistication
Nancy, Libraries and Analytics
Goldstein's Academic Analytics: The Uses of Management Information and Technology in Higher Education (2005) mentions "five levels of sophistication of use" of academic analytics. 1) transaction only: i.e. "How many students logged in to Course Y in the last 24 hours?" You would run a query on the learning management system but it would only happen on command.2) "analysis and monitoring of operational performance": An illustration of might be: "What is the trend in Mediasite (lecture .... Analytics are here, just unevenly distributed
Steven, Steven J. Zuiker
The range and variation of digital data agendas underscore William Gibson’s observation: “the future is already here – it is just unevenly distributed.” While people and their tools have generated log files and the like for decades, a constellation of organizations and institutions are now marking their own unique inflection points through new relationships with [...] [Link] Mon, 30 Jan 2012 23:49:15 +0000 [Comment]

Critical Thinking in Analytics
wkim83, Learning about Learning Analytics
In his presentation, Amazon.com’s John Rauser talks about the importance of both skepticism and curiosity in having a career as a data scientist.  I found this quite refreshing because I am a novice (to be kind) in mathematics and engineering. … Continue reading → [Link] Mon, 30 Jan 2012 20:35:25 +0000 [Comment]

Being a data scientist - a revival?
Jeroen Donkers, Jeroen's Course blog Learning Analytics #LAK12
After watching the presentation of John Rauser (Amazon) at Strata New York 2011 on the topic of data scientist carreer, I came to the amazing conclusion that I am trained (amongst other things) as a data scientist!  I have a background in mathematics (bachelor at Nijmegen), but also in operations research and artificial intelligence (master at Maastricht). The program in Maastricht is called "Knowledge Engineering" - but maybe they should switch their name to "Data Science" to keep at .... [Link] Mon, 30 Jan 2012 20:31:00 +0000 [Comment]

#LAK12 Google vs. your English 101 instructor
Nancy, Libraries and Analytics
LA is fundamentally ethically different from the analysis done by online vendors because of power differentials. The relationship between you and your English 101 instructor, or your institution of higher education as a whole, is much different than your relationship between you and Google or Facebook or Amazon. When online, we often operate under the assumption that our activities are occurring in our bedrooms, so to speak. We don't always consciously operate as if our online activities ....
