Ethical analysis
LifeLongStudent, Lifelong Learning
A couple of people on the LAK12 MOOC (massive open online course) have commented on the ethical avenues opening with access to so much data that Higher Education establishments can now collect about their students.    At the moment, I can’t think what analysis would be unethical behaviour, but suppose another organisation asked us for the [...] [Link] Fri, 27 Jan 2012 11:36:55 +0000 [Comment]

Learning Analytics – Business Intelligence in Education and Learning
Chris Ballard, Tribal Labs
Using business intelligence tools and techniques, such as data analytics, education organisations can use the data they have about learners and their organisation to help drive improvement and support individuals who may be struggling. Learning Analytics is a relatively new term which refers to the use of data about learners for the purpose of understanding and optimising learning. Who Owns Your Data?
Bianka Hajdu, Marcadores de Cartograf: bianka
The important question isn't who owns the data. Ultimately, we all do. A better question is, who owns the means of analysis? Because that's how, as Brand suggests, you get the right information in the right place. The digital divide isn't about who owns data - it's about who can put that data to work. # [Link] Thu, 26 Jan 2012 04:03:16 +0000 [Comment]

Dave Ritter, #LAK12 - Learning Analytics
This is a new blog related to the Learning Analytics MOOC that I just enrolled in. I have admired the work of George Siemens and Steven Downes in regards to Connectivism, and to learn about the rising importance of analytics in a course with them is inspiring. As a rank novice to the topic of analytics I hope to gain some insight on how this can be utilized in the classroom and in research.I am excited to work and learn with many of you during these eight weeks. My hope is that I can contribute .... [Link] 2012-01-24T20:09:00.000-08:00 [Comment]

LAK12 Learning Analytics: Some Questions from the Drive In
Nancy, Libraries and Analytics
Driving to work this morning in the light rain I brainstormed about some possible questions about learning analytics:What are the intellectual freedom and privacy implications of LA?Can/should LA data be used in evaluations of teachers? What are the philosophical assumptions/bases of LA? Is LA based on a behaviorist, humanist, progressive, etc. educational philosophy?Who owns the data generated by students? (I'm pretty sure I have seen this addressed in some of the literature, perhaps not .... [Link] Thu, 26 Jan 2012 13:29:00 +0000 [Comment]

[Comment]

Big data, stupid decisions #LAK12
Bianka Hajdu, 651 - odlsharonslade, January 26, 2012.

One of the main points of Ipeirotis' presentation was that the meaning of data depends on the contexts and so, for measuring, it is also necessary to consider context. Poor grammar in product comments results in less sales of that product in the case of Amazon. In your example, which I find interesting, poor grammar in tutor feedback should be also linked to something students do in the course of their relationship with the tutor. Perhaps the frequency in their interaction could be an indicator? Anyway, I think analytics linked to texts may turn out to be an important issue in [Comment]
